Linda Yaccarino, Twitter’s new CEO, on Monday shared her thoughts on the future of Twitter.
In a long tweet thread that was also emailed to employees, the CEO explained what Twitter 2.0 will look like.
“Twitter is on a mission to become the world’s most accurate real-time information source and a global town square for communication. That’s not an empty promise,” Ms. Yaccarino said. “That’s OUR reality.”
Ms. Yaccarino’s vision of Twitter’s future looks a lot like former CEO Elon Musk’s but with slightly more professional phrasing. When Mr. Musk bought Twitter last year, he entered his CEO position with the intention of turning the site into a haven for free speech.
Mr. Musk’s “free speech absolutism” meant bringing back accounts that were banned under previous Twitter leadership. A lot of those accounts were conservative influencers, including former President Donald Trump.
Mr. Musk received plaudits from conservatives who finally were shed of Twitter’s previous shackles. At the same time, some advertisers backed out of putting their ads on Twitter after reports of increased hate speech on the platform. The result has been a loss of revenue for Twitter, which is bringing in just half of the advertising revenue it was at the same time last year.
In response to his money troubles, the billionaire owner brought in Ms. Yaccarino, a longtime ad executive, to take over as CEO while he continues as executive chairman and chief technology officer.
