Devi Lovato just got tired of telling people to refer to her as “they” rather than “she.”
Ms. Lovato was one of the first major celebrities to publicly declare herself “nonbinary” and use the gender-neutral plural pronoun “they” rather than the singular, which requires a choice between “he” and “she.”
She altered her pronoun preference last year to include “she/her” and said then that she had been “feeling more feminine.”
Not quite, she told GQ Hype Spain.
She told the Spanish magazine for an interview posted this week that it just got “exhausting” and that the publication could use feminine pronouns.
“I constantly had to educate people and explain why I identified with those pronouns. It was absolutely exhausting,” she said, according to a Washington Times translation of the original Spanish done with computer assistance.
“That is one of the reasons that have led me to also feel comfortable with the feminine pronoun. Simply, I became tired,” she said, while adding that “that is why I know that it is important to continue spreading the word.”
